Rough Close

Rough Close is a 43-acre campsite and activity centre located 4.5 miles from Coventry City centre on the western outskirts of the City. Access is via a gated private drive from the B4101, Tanners Lane, Berkswell.

The site ranges over 43 acres of ancient natural woodland, which is criss-crossed by tracks and paths. This woodland together with its abundant wildlife make an ideal Scout campsite enjoying the peace and quiet of the countryside whilst being within minutes of the City’s urban civilisation.

The camping areas comprise of 2 large fields, 4 smaller fields and 10 pocket sites. Toilet and shower facilities are available with both hot and cold water.

The Norton Cabin, is the premier accommodation on-site, has sleeping for 18 young people in three bunk rooms and 4 adult leaders in two bunk rooms, it has full facilities including a fully fitted kitchen, day room, toilet and shower facilities fully equipped for the less able members. It is centrally heated and equipped with a fire alarm system. Adjacent is “Ma Williams” Cub Field which is associated with the building and can be used for camping and games.

Due to current pandemic we have removed all cooking utensils and crockery etc. It will be the responsibility of the User Group to provide these.

The ‘George Sheppard’ Cabin provides a superb day room suitable for training or section meetings and has a fully fitted kitchen and the cabin is centrally heated. Adjacent is the ‘Scout Training Field’ which is associated with the building and can be used for camping and games.

Due to the current pandemic we have removed all cooking utensils and crockery etc. It is the responsibility of the User Group to provide these.

Site Instructor Led activities:
Crate Climbing Max 10 people (available between March 23rd – October 24th)

Climbing Tower: Max 8 people time period Hour and a half
Weather conditions may prevent outdoor Instructor Led activities taking place.

Leader Led activities:

Traverse & Peg Wall, Pedal Cars, Orienteering, Pioneering, Geo-Caching, Gun Carriages, Cavebus, Frisbee Golf, Tunnel Complex.

Reception Office is open from 6:00pm Friday’s when keys for cabins booked can be collected other times by prior arrangement only. (Note: No Public Camping)

The Scout Association Young People First – Child Protection will apply, where Groups or Organisations have none.

Please be courteous to all our neighbours and drive slowly passed the cottages at the end of the drive, no undue vehicle movement after 11:30pm, and to the local farmers if walking along the public rights of way, leave no litter and follow the Country Code.

Risk Assessments: Group Leaders are responsible for doing their own risk assessments.

Travelling by road
For ease we will describe the directions to the site from the M6 or M42, as this will help you to avoid the city. If you wish to be
adventurous, we are located just outside of the city on the west side between Tile Hill and Berkswell.

M6 North or South
Come off at Junction 4; Take the A446 to Kenilworth and becomes the A452. Follow this road for approx. 10km (6 miles) till you arrive
at Balsall Common. (** See directions below)

M42 North or South
Take Junction 6 and follow the A45 to Coventry, come off at the first turn. Follow the A452 to Kenilworth for
about 7km (4.2 miles) till you arrive at Balsall Common. (** See directions below)

** Directions
Keep following the A452 to Kenilworth; go across four roundabouts of various sizes. At the first set of traffic lights, turn left onto the B4101 signposted Coventry. Follow the B4101 for about 2.5 km (1.5 miles) past Nailcote Hall, you will then come to a junction turn left, after 300 metres at the roundabout turn right into Tanners Lane. After about 400 metres, on the left is Benton Green Lane, carry on AND the entrance is after this on the left, evidenced by two white signs indicating “Rough Close”. Please drive slowly and carefully along the private drive and be aware of children and animals. There is a deep ditch on the right hand side of the drive as you enter the site.

Travelling by train
We are 1.6 km (1 mile) from Tile Hill train station. Please contact National Rail Enquires on 08457 48 49 50 for details of services. www.nationalrail.co.uk

Flying?
We are only 17 km (10 miles) from Birmingham International Airport and their rail station is only two stops from Tile Hill! Birmingham International is also the station for the National Exhibition Centre.

 Firework Displays and/or Hot Air Lanterns will NOT be permitted; to be carried out at the County Scout Campsite – Rough Close at any time during the year. This be become part of the Campsites Term and Conditions for ALL users with immediate effect.

CHAINSAWS

Safe operating procedure for Chainsaws Rough Close Scout Campsite:

Campers at Rough Close are NOT PERMITTED, even if qualified with appropriate NPTC to operate a chainsaw on the premises

REVIEW OF SITE FEES FOR 2023
The Rough Close Management Committee have reviewed prices. Regretfully we have had to increase prices effective from 1st May 2023. The prices have remained the same for a number of years.

Chapel Area
The Chapel and surrounding area has been improved with a number of native British Woodland trees planted.
When completed the area will again become an area of quiet contemplation for all denominations of Scouts and visitors.

Rifle Range
(Lead Free Pellets effective from 01-01-15)
Only 0.177 Lead Free Pellets will be used in the Range.
Groups using their own equipment MUST also comply.
Failure to do so will result in an additional Cleaning Charge being levied on the Group. (minimum charge £60.00)
This facility may be used for other activities hence the reason for Lead Free Pellets to avoid any contamination risks.

Maintenance Work
On-going work is being carried out across the site to improve camping areas and the trackway onto site.
Due to very “WET” conditions and standing water on some areas of camping fields. It may be necessary to move Groups to different areas or in exceptional circumstances cancel bookings.
